As the novel opens on January 1, Stargirl is writing to Leo about how excited she is about the possibilities of her schooling and her new town, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.Phoenixville is really flat, but she senses that some magic can still happen here.Susan ends up loving creeping around peoples’ houses at 4 a.m. Stargirl is usually outspoken and adventurous, but all she wants to do lately is sit at home and mope; having lost her favorite person in the world (Leo) she feels incapable of being herself.

She measures her self-satisfaction with the world through a “happy wagon.” If she is feeling sad, she removes a pebble; she says the Happy Wagon is about twenty-five percent full these days.

But in the next entry just two days later, Susan admits to missing Leo and her old life so much that she just cannot stand it.

Homeschooled now, she has a little too much time on her hands.
